Made in the 1950s by Kipp & Zonen in Delft, the Moll microphotometer is an instrument designed to analyze the transparency of spectral lines on photographic plates. The plate is positioned on the focal plane and scrolled along the wavelength direction, while an extremely thin and collimated light beam passes through the sample.

The transmitted light is measured by a photosensitive element, allowing to determine the transparency of the spectrum as a function of wavelength. Knowing the characteristic curve of the plate, the intensity of the spectrum can be accurately calculated. A fundamental instrument for detailed spectroscopic studies.
